Most Memorable Doomben 10,000 Wins

The weight-for-age Doomben 10,000 is one of the highlights of the Queensland Winter carnival with plenty of great horses, as well as up and coming stars winning the race.

In anticipation of Saturday’s race, we have gone through the Doomben 10,000 honour roll and put together this list of some of the most memorable wins.

2017 – Redzel

The 2017 Doomben 10,000 was Redzel’s first Group 1 victory and it would be the stepping stone for the gelding to go on to bigger and better things.

He went on to win his next four races in the Spring including the inaugural running of The Everest and the Darley Classic.

2016 Music Magnate

Only 9 horses made up the field in the 2016 running of the Doomben 10,000 with the likes of Azkedelia, Charlie Boy, Fell Swoop and Dothraki trying the win the race.

But it was Music Magnate winning his first Group 1 who stormed clear over the concluding stages. The 6 year old gelding has had two unsuccessful trips overseas to England and Dubai.

2015 Boban

As the field turned for home in the 2015 Doomben 10,000, the Chris Waller-trained Boban was near last.

The field seemed to part perfectly for him and he burst through to win his 4th Group 1.

He would run second in the Stradbroke two weeks later.

2014 – Spirit Of Boom

One of the things that appeals in the feature Queensland races is seeing the local horses take on the sometimes more established and more fancied runners from interstate.

Spirit of Boom has been one of the more popular horses in Queensland in recent times and when he won the Doomben 10,000 in 2014 the local crowd erupted.

He is doing an excellent job as a young stallion standing at Eureka Stud in Queensland.

He has produced 15 individual winners making him not only the leading first season sire but also the leading sire of 2 yo’s in Australia.

2009 Apache Cat

The popular gelding with the bald white face headed back to Brisbane in 2009 to defend his Doomben 10,000 crown and he did not disappoint.

He ran 3rd in the BTC Cup before outlasting two-time Stradbroke winner Black Piranha in the 10,000.

He became the first horse since Falvelon to go back to back in the feature Doomben event.

2007 Takeover Target

What a horse. What a story.

Takeover Target was a well travelled galloper to say the least and in 2007 he stopped into Queensland yet again.

He picked up the Doomben 10,000 prize money and off he went to take on the world.

2006 Undue

Undue was not a champion race horse but he did manage to upset the field in the 2006 Doomben 10,000 at a massive $41.

He would prove his 10,000 success was no fluke by taking out the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate the following Autumn, again at a big price.
